7 Jul – A new type of cinema seats known as D-Box is set to debut in Malaysia, as the nation's leading movie exhibitor, Golden Screen Cinemas, is tapped to introduce the new feature in their cinemas sometime this year. D-Box Motion Seats are programmed to move with the visual and sound effects of a movie playing on screen. The seats are able to function via motion actuators embedded in the cinema seat that is able to make movements such as pitch, roll and heave as well as intelligent vibrations known as Motion Effects (MFX). The D-Box seat also enables one to adjustable MFX levels to control the intensity of the motions. The seats are equipped with a weight occupancy sensor system that will detect if there is someone seated, so only occupied D-Box seats will function.
Developed by Canadian company, D-Box Technologies, D-Box Motion Seats made their commercial appearance in cinemas at the MANN Chinese 6 theatre in Hollywood with the movie "Fast And Furious" in 2009. In Singapore, D-Box was first introduced by cinema exhibitor Golden Village at their Bishan location which made its debut with "Need For Speed" last 13 March 2014. Currently MBO Cinemas Citta Mall at Ara Damansara features a hall with actuator seats that vibrates with the bass, however the actuator seats are not of the D-Box variety and does not feature MFX. D-Box Motion Seats are expected to arrive at Golden Screen Cinemas (GSC Cinemas) by year end. It is speculated that the seats may be introduced in one or more of the following GSC Cinemas; the yet to open GSC Nu Sentral KL, GSC Quill City Mall KL, GSC IOI Putrajaya or the currently under renovation GSC Mid Valley, Kuala Lumpur. This is however, subject to change. Watch the video below to find out more about D-Box Motion Seats:
