"Jupiter Ascending" delayed to 2015

6 Jun – Bad news if you've been waiting to see "Jupiter Ascending" in cinemas this July.

The Hollywood Reporter has brought news that the sci-fi adventure from the Wachowski siblings has been taken off its 18 July 2014 slot to a new one on 6 February 2015.

Just about a month away from its initial release date, the Hollywood Reporter is citing insider sources that the release had to be delayed to finish the massive effects work on more than 2,000 shots for the USD150 million space adventure.

"With the July release date, they were just not going to make it on time," said Warner Bros. American distribution chief Dan Fellman to Variety.

"A lot of the issue for us was getting it ready for the international release, since the foreign territories need additional time," he added.

"Jupiter Ascending" stars Channing Tatum and Mila Kunis. Tatum is a space warrior who travels across the universe to bring Kunis's Jupiter, a human who grew up to be a domestic cleaner, back to her rightful place as a Princess of the Universe, while protecting her from assassins sent by the Queen of the Universe in an epic struggle for power and dominance.

The effects in "Jupiter Ascending" needs more time to be completed.

Also affected from this shifting of dates is the Liam Neeson vehicle "Run All Night" that has been moved to make way for "Jupiter Ascending" to an unannounced date.

While the move to a February slot could be troubling for those who know what such release dates are usually reserved for, Warner Bros. marketing is not optimistic that this would spell doom for the once summer blockbuster based on recent examples.

"G.I. Joe: Retaliation", also starring Channing Tatum, was pushed from its summer release slot in 2012 to a cold March 2013 release but did brisk business with a USD375.7 million worldwide box office gross. Although early speculations for the delay were related to the survivability of Tatum's character, it was later revealed to be for 3D conversion reasons.

Also defying the trend of having a less desirable release date is "The LEGO Movie" that was released on the same date range this year that would be occupied by "Jupiter Ascending" in the next. Critical thumbs up aside, "The LEGO Movie" unexpectedly opened to a USD69 million gross, becoming the largest animation ever to open on those dates.
