Maleficent's spell broken in U.S.

Angelina Jolie in "Maleficent" is refusing to budge from the top 3 ranking.

10 Jun – It would appear that Maleficent's spell is almost running out as she takes the second spot in U.S. and Singapore, while the film maintains it reign over Malaysia for last week's weekend box office collection, 5 to 8 June 2014.

The Angelina Jolie starrer had collected USD34.3 million last weekend bringing its accumulative domestic collection to USD128 million thus far, but the film that knocked "Maleficent" out of her chair is the freshly release young adult film, "The Fault In Our Stars" which grossed over USD48.0 million in its opening weekend.

The film is directed by Josh Boone based on a novel by the same name starring a young and talented cast, Shailene Woodley, Ansel Elgort and Nat Wolff.

"The Fault In Our Stars", starring Shailene Woodley and Ansel Elgort beat "Maleficent" by taking the top spot in U.S.

In third place, collecting USD28.7 over the weekend is none other than Tom Cruise's science fiction film, "Edge of Tomorrow" which also made its debut last weekend.

"Maleficent" clearly still had the Malaysian viewers under her spell as she still remained at first place at the Malaysian weekend box office for the second week running. "Edge of Tomorrow" comes in second and "X-Men: Days of Future Past" has been moved to third place.

Meanwhile, for Singapore's weekend box office, Tom Cruise's "Edge of Tomorrow" climbed the top spot beating "Maleficent" and "X-Men: Days of Future Past" to second and third place respectively as they brushed off "Godzilla" out of the top three spots.

"Edge of Tomorrow", starring Tom Cruise and Emily Blunt, claimed the third spot in U.S, second place in Malaysia and first place in Singapore.

Also opening in Malaysia last week were, "Like Father, Like Son", "Make Me Shudder 2: Mae Nak Horror", "Kiasu", "Contracted", "Supersquad The Movie", "Hantu Nan Sempit" and "Legend of Oz: Dorothy's Return".

Although only releasing on 12 June in Malaysia, sneak shows for Adam Sandler's "Blended" and the animation "How To Train Your Dragon 2" have already started since last week.

Other new movies that opened in Singapore last week are "Naked Ambition", "Chef", "In The Blood", "Draft Day" and "Blended".
