Benjy faces death penalty for meth trafficking

Benjy (left) and his friend face the death sentence if found guilty.

10 Apr – Local actor Benjy and a friend have recently been charged at the Muar Magistrate Court in Johor with drug trafficking.

The 37-year-old, born Khaeryll Benjamin Ibrahim, along with 27-year-old Raja Shariff Hidayatullah Raja Shariffudin, was charged with trafficking in more than 1.3kg of methamphetamine, as reported by BERNAMA.

No pleas were recorded from the duo, who only nodded to indicate they understood the charges read to them before Magistrate Mohd Syafiq Mustaza. The duo allegedly committed the offence in front of a gas station along Jalan Pagoh-Muar at around 1.30am on 27 March.

If found guilty, both offenders face the mandatory death penalty by hanging.

This is the third time for Benjy to be involved in a drug case. Back in 2011, the actor was charged for possession of 0.24 gram of meth at his home in Kuala Lumpur.

The son of late actress Azean Irdawaty was once again arrested in 2013, this time the actor tested positive for meth following a urine test done during a police raid at Bukit Antarabangsa. A meth lab was also reportedly discovered at the location during the raid.

That same year, Benjy divorced wife Safiyya Stephanie Kar Leng Lee, with their child custody rewarded to the latter, and stated that their son Firdaus will stay with him during the holidays but he is allowed to visit the boy whenever he misses him.

Re-mention of the current case has been set for 28 May, pending the chemist's report.
