"Fast & Furious 7" revs up charts

"Fast and Furious 7" is heading towards the billion dollar club at the box office charts.

7 Apr – The seventh instalment of the "Fast and Furious" franchise finally opened last week to a big USD392 million worldwide gross, as it predictably dominated the box office charts of every territory it was released in, including in U.S., Malaysia and Singapore, making it the highest-grossing global opening of 2015 to date.

Titled "Furious 7" for the U.S. market, the Vin Diesel, Paul Walker and Dwayne Johnson led action movie finished its domestic opening week run at USD147.2 million, according to Box Office Mojo.

Twentieth Century Fox's animation movie, "Home" which took first place two weeks ago in the U.S., has brought in USD27 million at second place last weekend.

At third place is the Will Ferrell and Kevin Hart comedy, "Get Hard", whose box office standing 'got soft' pretty fast as it moved from second to third place in U.S. last weekend with USD13.1 million.

Over in Malaysia, the implementation of the Goods and Services Tax (GST) didn't stop moviegoers from rushing fast and furiously to the cinemas to get their tickets for "Fast and Furious 7" - the first big movie to open with GST charges - as it knocks off previous top spot holder, "Insurgent", to a massive seventh place drop!

Second and third place last weekend in Malaysia, went to "Home" and the new Tamil movie "Nannbenda" starring Udhayanidhi Stalin and Nayantara.

Moviegoers in Malaysia rushed fast and furiously to snag tickets for "Fast and Furious 7" last weekend.

In Singapore last weekend, as expected, audiences flocked to see Paul Walker in one of his final roles as "Fast and Furious 7" took the top spot, while "Home" and "Cinderella" took in second and third place respectively.

The worldwide gross of "Fast and Furious 7" at USD245.1 million to date has earned the movie the third-highest international debut of all-time behind "Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2" (USD314 mil) and "Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides" (USD260 mil).

The movie is expected to earn USD1 billion globally by the end of its run, considering the film has yet to open at giant box office markets like China (12 April), Japan (17 April) and Russia (9 April).

Other new movies that were released in Malaysia last week are, "The Wonderful Wedding", "Pieces Of Easter", "Komban", "Parasyte Part 1", "Detective Byomkesh Bakshy" and "Sagaptham".

In Singapore, new movies that were released last week are, "Detective Byomkesh Bakshy", "Nannbenda", "Insanity", "While We're Young", "Komban", "Two Thumbs Up" and "The Con Artists".
