12 Aug – "Mission: Impossible Rogue Nation" has infiltrated the number one spot since its debut and it currently has no plans to let go. The Tom Cruise-starrer is still number one in the U.S., having collected another USD28.5 million domestically over the weekend, based on Box Office Mojo stats, bringing its worldwide gross to a total of USD264.4 million. At number two, "Fantastic Four" made its relatively weak debut last weekend. The superhero reboot failed to meet expectations and was only able to collect USD25.6 million domestically, rounding up a USD59.7 million worldwide gross against its USD120 million budget.
Marvel may be a name associated to one blockbuster hit after another for the past years, but Fox, who has the movie rights to "Fantastic Four", learns the hard way that just relying on the branding alone may not be enough. Though so far Disney, who owns Marvel, has been faring well with its big screen adaptations, the reboot's unexpected failure may still keep the studio on the edge of its seat for its next Marvel movies. Miles Teller, Michael B. Jordan, Jamie Bell and Kate Mara may not be returning for a sequel since not only did the reboot underperformed at the box office, it also received widely negative reviews from critics. Opening at number three was Joel Edgerton's "The Gift", in which he himself starred in along with Jason Bateman and Rebecca Hall. The psychological thriller, which has been garnering positive reviews, collected USD11.8 million domestically, already making back its budget of USD5 million.
"Fantastic Four" was not well-received in the U.S., but it at least did manage to place first during its opening weekend in Malaysia. "Mission: Impossible Rogue Nation" was knocked down to number two while the Hong Kong movie "Wild City", directed by Ringo Lam and starring Louis Koo, Shawn Yue and Tong Liya, opened at number three. Over in Singapore, "Mission: Impossible Rogue Nation" defended its number one spot well. Newly opened "Fantastic Four" managed to land on number two while "Marvel's Ant-Man" falls yet another spot last weekend down to number three. Malaysia's new releases last weekend include "To the Fore", "Southpaw", "Dark Soul", "Chandi Veeran", "Srimanthudu", "Vandha Mala" and "Under the Sea". Other new releases in Singapore last weekend are "To the Fore", "The Gift", "Vacation" and "Mr Holmes".
