N.W.A's biopic "Straight Outta Compton" opened at number one.

19 Aug – Borrowing its name from the group's 1988 debut studio album, N.W.A's biographical drama "Straight Outta Compton" goes straight to the top of the U.S. box office on its opening weekend.

Meanwhile, "Pixels" finally opened in Malaysia and Singapore, placing first at both countries' weekend box office for 13 to 16 August.

Two new movies conquered the U.S. weekend box office, with the aforementioned hip hop biopic opening at number one while Henry Cavill and Armie Hammer-starrer "The Man from U.N.C.L.E." took number three, leaving Tom Cruise's "Mission: Impossible Rogue Nation" sandwiched between the new releases at number two.

"Straight Outta Compton" has set tongues wagging when it closed the weekend with an impressive USD60.2 million domestic gross, making it the highest-grossing biopic opening in the U.S., even beating the USD51.2 million opening gross of Eminem's 2002 rap biopic, "8 Mile".

The N.W.A biopic, produced by members Ice Cube and Dr. Dre, currently places fourth on the U.S. Top 10 Music Biopic list. It is the only biopic with hip hop influence within the top three, placing higher than 2009's "Notorious", a biopic on rapper The Notorious B.I.G., which is currently placed at number nine.

"Mission: Impossible Rogue Nation" is down one place with its weekend gross of USD17.1 million. So far, the fifth instalment in the "Mission: Impossible" franchise has a USD375.4 million worldwide gross.

"The Man from U.N.C.L.E.", a movie adapted from the same name 1960s American TV series, failed to impress on its opening weekend as the espionage movie received mixed reviews and only raked in USD13.4 million domestically. Worldwide it now has USD26.9 million, still a far cry from its USD75 million production budget.

"Pixels" wins M'sia and S'pore charts.

"Pixels", the Adam Sandler action comedy by Chris Columbus, finally opened in Malaysia and immediately took over number one. "Fantastic Four" was knocked off a spot and landed on number two, also pushing "Mission: Impossible Rogue Nation" down to number three.

Similarly in Singapore, "Pixels" opened at number one, removing "Mission: Impossible Rogue Nation" from the top spot and down to number two. "Attack On Titan - Part 1", a Japanese live-action adaptation of popular manga and anime series "Shingeki no Kyojin", opened at number three. The action sci-fi movie is released simultaneously in two versions, whereby the original uncut version is rated M18 and the edited version is rated NC16.

Other movies that were released in Malaysia last weekend are "Vasuvum Saravananum Onna Padichavanga", "The Black Death", "Robot Overlords", "One Night In Taipei", "Nota", "Brothers", "The Crossing 2" and "Deep Sea".
