No more "Divergent" on the big screen

The final movie in the "Divergent" franchise is going straight to TV.

21 Jul – Fans who have been waiting to see how "The Divergent Series: Ascendant" will tie up the whole "Divergent" movie franchise, disappointment will ascend in them.

The fourth and final movie in the "Divergent" franchise will forgo theatrical release, according to Variety, so that means no more of the Shailene Woodley-starrer on the big screen.

However, do not despair. The final instalment will still be released, it will just be on a much smaller screen – the television.

"Ascendant" is going straight to TV to wrap up the movie series. That is what distributor Lionsgate is planning.

Still, this does not mean the end for the franchise, while there may not be any more movies, a spinoff standalone TV series is also currently being planned.

No word on whether Woodley and other cast members including Theo James and Ansel Elgort will return for the TV movie.

"The Divergent Series: Ascendant" was originally planned for release in North America in June 2017. But due to lacklustre reception toward the third movie, "The Divergent Series: Allegiant" that was released earlier this year, its release plan is forced to undergo some changes.

Based on Veronica Roth's best-selling trilogy novel of the same name, the first movie adaptation, "Divergent" grossed USD288.9 million worldwide upon its release in 2014. The 2015 sequel, "Insurgent", made USD297.3 million worldwide.

"Allegiant", unfortunately, was only able to make a worldwide gross of USD179.2 million against its USD110 million budget (the same budget as "Insurgent" and USD25 million more than "Divergent").
