FINAS finally gets rid of FFM segregation but introduces new category

Director General of FINAS, Datuk Kamil Othman has before this said that he is ready
to make the changes for FFM 28.

11 Aug – The local industry has been shaken and stirred quite a bit after the segregation of the Malaysia Film Festival (FFM) nominees for the main categories were first announced. However, things are finally settling down as the National Film Development Corporation of Malaysia (FINAS) has issued a statement.

Through their Facebook page, FINAS has announced that all films regardless of language will be allowed to compete in the main Best Film category.

The amendment comes after Malaysia's Communications and Multimedia Minister, Datuk Seri Dr Salleh Said Keruak announced that all Malaysian films will be competing under the main category and there will also be a new category introduced especially for films in the national language called, Best National Language Film.

The nominees for the new category would be from the previous Best Film nominees which were all in Bahasa Malaysia.

The other categories; Best Director for a non-Bahasa Malaysia film and Best Screenplay for a non-Bahasa Malaysia film are removed.

All the non-Bahasa Malaysia nominees previously mentioned in those categories will be absorbed into the main Best Director and Best Screenplay categories.

There will be no other changes made to the other categories this year.

Earlier on, the whole FFM 28 debacle started following the announcement of the nominations last week, which saw the segregation of non-Bahasa Malaysia productions into their own non-Bahasa Malaysia categories – an act that was quickly deemed racists by the public, including key people in the local film industry.
