"Kung Fu Panda 3" opened at No.1.

2 Feb – "Kung Fu Panda 3" has arrived and it 'panda stumbled' its way straight to number one at the U.S. weekend box office for 28 to 31 January 2016.

Though the 'weight' is not yet over for Malaysia and Singapore as the third instalment of the animated movie franchise will only open in the cinemas this 10 March.

The likes of Jack Black, Angelina Jolie, Lucy Liu and Jackie Chan return to voice the characters in "Kung Fu Panda 3", which opened first in the U.S. last weekend to the tune of USD41.2 million in domestic gross, based on Box Office Mojo stats.

Having also opened at other markets such as China and South Korea, the movie starring a clumsy panda named Po now has a worldwide gross of USD116.9 million.

If it can maintain its momentum, "Kung Fu Panda 3" just might surpass its predecessors' worldwide gross of USD215.4 million (2008's "Kung Fu Panda") and USD165.2 million (2011's "Kung Fu Panda 2") by the end of its run.

Unfortunately for the multiple award-winning "The Revenant", having been punched by the animated movie, it had to move down a spot to number two.

The Leonardo DiCaprio-starrer made another USD12.7 million in the U.S., bringing its current worldwide gross to USD281.2 million.

Also forced down a spot and now placing third, "Star Wars: The Force Awakens" raked in USD11.1 million domestically last weekend while worldwide it now has grossed USD1.9 billion.

It may only be number three, on both the weekend box office chart and the all-time worldwide highest-grossing chart, but the success of the space opera has made Walt Disney Co. a force to be reckoned with as the company was recently named Brand Finance's most powerful brand of 2016.

Malaysian movie "Ola Bola" received standing ovations at the cinema.

Tamil horror movie "Aranmanai 2" opened at number one in Malaysia last weekend, while previous first placer "The 5th Wave" slid down three spots and no longer remained in the top three.

Opening at number two is Chiu Keng Guan-directed "Ola Bola". It has collected more than RM2.5 million in just 4 days of showing in cinemas nationwide as well as in Brunei. The heart-warming zero-to-hero movie also reportedly received standing ovations in cinemas.

This seems to be paving the way for another "The Journey" success for the director, whose aforementioned 2014 movie was previously Malaysia's highest-grossing local movie of all time with its RM17.1 million gross.

Down a spot to number three is "The Boy". The horror movie about a possibly alive doll doesn't seem to resonate well with international audiences but regionally the Lauren Cohan (TV's "The Walking Dead")-starrer is being embraced quite well.

"The Boy" made number one in Singapore on its opening weekend, while Zac Efron and Robert De Niro-starring "Dirty Grandpa" entered the chart at number two. Demoted one spot is "The Big Short", now settled at number three.

Only two other movies opened in Malaysia last weekend, which are "The Revenant" and "Irudhi Suttru". Whereas other new releases in Singapore for last weekend are "Saala Khadoos", "Mastizaade", "Irudhi Suttru", "The Dressmaker" and "Soggade Chinni Nayana".
