13 Jun – After months in cinemas, Stephen Chow's "The Mermaid" was recently named the highest-grossing Chinese movie ever, earning a total of USD553.8 million worldwide. As reported on ECNS News, the comedy movie not only received rave reviews in its home country, but also across Asia since its release on Lunar New Year. It was also praised during its limited release in the United States where it collected USD3.2 million. In China alone, the movie not only knocked down "Monster Hunt" off its box office throne, but also broke other records, including the biggest opening day, biggest single day gross for a Chinese movie, as well as the first Chinese movie to break past USD455 million. The bulk of its box office collection came from China with USD526 million. In Southeast Asian countries, "The Mermaid" fared well too especially in territories like Malaysia where the movie grossed USD7.02 million, in Singapore USD3.1 million and USD4.4 million in Vietnam, according to Box Office Mojo. "The Mermaid" stars newcomer Jelly Lin as the titular character, named Shan. Other cast members include Deng Chao ("The Bodyguard"), Show Luo ("Journey to the West") and Kitty Zhang ("Lost in the Pacific"). Deng stars opposite Jelly as Hin, the mermaid's love interest whose real estate project involves reclamation of the sea, threatening the livelihood of the residents who rely on the sea to make a living. However, Shan's plan to thwart his leads to them falling for each other instead.
