"Redha" and local cinemas raise awareness of autism

"Redha" will be released during Autism Awareness Month, April.

29 Mar – With April being Autism Awareness Month, it is only fitting that a movie highlighting autism is released during the month.

"Redha", directed by Tunku Mona Riza, collaborates with local cinemas Golden Screen Cinemas (GSC) and MBO Cinemas to increase public awareness about autism.

GSC will be helping spread the awareness by turning blue – its online platforms will don the hue while its social media pages will feature snippets on autism.

On ground cinema staff will also be wearing a blue button badge throughout the month.

Apart from that, with every "Redha" ticket sold at GSC, RM1 will be donated to the National Autism Society of Malaysia (NASOM).

Meanwhile, MBO Cinemas is lending a hand to the cause by putting up buntings at its cinemas and doing a short promo video to raise awareness. Cinema staff will also be wearing T-shirts especially made for the cause.

Inspired by a true story, the director of "Redha" took it upon herself to research about autism and how it affects families in Malaysia, in order to raise awareness of it after meeting an old friend with an autistic child.

It was previously mentioned by National Film Development Corporation (FINAS) Director General Dato' Kamil Othman that "Redha" is one of the few local movies that have a higher chance of being sent to international festivals.

Even though it was shot locally, it was edited and rearranged by a film expert from France, whose line of work includes picking which movies are suitable to be sent to international film festivals across Europe. Hence, "Redha" is now deemed of a standard that is worthy to be submitted to the Berlinale.

The movie tells the story of a boy with autism, who causes a lot of hardships for his parents as his father isn't accepting the fact that he is different from the rest while his mother is trying her best to fit his needs.

"Redha" is set to premiere at GSC Pavilion this 2 April 2016 and open in cinemas nationwide on 14 April 2016.
