19 Jan – Kevin Hart and Ice Cube came barrelling in at number one with "Ride Along 2" at the U.S. weekend box office for 14 to 17 January 2016. Directed by Tim Story, the sequel to 2014's "Ride Along" opened with USD35.3 million in the U.S. Adding on its foreign gross, the comedy movie now has grossed USD44.2 million worldwide, already making back its USD40 million production budget, based on Box Office Mojo stats. "Ride Along 2" has yet to reach our shores, however, as it will only open in Malaysia this 21 January and about a month later in Singapore on 25 February. Staying put at number two is still "The Revenant". The movie made another USD31.8 million domestically, while globally it has now grossed USD155.8 million, more than double its worldwide gross last weekend. The Leonardo DiCaprio-starrer recently won two more awards at the Critics' Choice Awards, bringing home Best Actor and Best Cinematography. Audiences in Malaysia and Singapore will only get to see the multi-award-winning movie by 28 January and 4 February. The force of "Star Wars: The Force Awakens" weakened as it dropped two spots to number three, making only USD26.3 million last weekend. However, that's not much of a worry for the highest-grossing movie of all time in the U.S. with its USD858.4 million gross. Internationally, the latest "Star Wars" saga is catching up to "Titanic" as it now has USD1.8 billion to its name. If it could past the latter's USD2.1 billion gross, it will place second as the highest-grossing movie of all time worldwide, with only 2009's "Avatar's" record of USD2.7 billion to beat.
Chloe Grace Moretz-starrer, "The 5th Wave", received a tidal welcome at the Malaysia weekend box office as it opened at number one. However, it is not the only new release to crush the older movies. Opening at number two was local Malay movie "Mat Moto: Kami Mat Moto Bukan Mat Rempit" and at number three Tamil movie, "Rajini Murugan". For "Mat Moto", the Pekin Ibrahim directorial debut has made an impressive record as it collected RM3 million in just 4 days of showing. It also made RM1.2 million on its opening day. Over in Singapore, "The 5th Wave" also made waves on its opening weekend, crashing straight onto number one. "Ip Man 3" and "Star Wars: The Force Awakens" were both shoved down a spot each, placing second and third respectively. Other new movies in Malaysia released last weekend are "Senior", "Kathakali", "Gethu", "The Secret", "Intruders" and "Mr. Unbelievable". Singapore's new releases for last weekend include "Detective Chinatown", "Franny", "Our Brand Is Crisis", "Concussion", "Port of Call", "Thaarai Thappattai", "Gethu", "Room", "Kathakali" and "Rajini Murugan".
