16 Feb – Stephen Chow's latest comedy movie, "The Mermaid", is making a splash at the local box office. Within seven days of its release, the movie has broken the box office record with RM16 million. To date, it is the number one Chinese New Year release in Malaysia for this year. Not only does it hold the record for the biggest Chinese New Year opening day of all-time, it also holds the record as the biggest opening day in the month of February and the biggest opening day for director Stephen Chow. Apart from that, it is also the biggest opening day of all-time for a Chinese language movie, surpassing another one of the comedy auter's movie, 2008's "CJ7", by 13% (RM2,001,254) and recent Donnie Yen-starrer, "Ip Man 3", by 32% (RM1,723,803). The movie has now become the biggest Chinese New Year opening for Sony Pictures. Prior releases that it has managed to surpass include "CJ7", "Robocop" by 34% (RM 1,692,838), "Underworld: Awakening" by 407% (RM 447,533) and "The Green Hornet" by 473% (RM 396,382) The fantasy comedy is on-track to becoming the highest grossing movie of all-time for Stephen Chow, who recently hinted there might be a sequel coming up. It currently holds the number two spot at the global box office, according to Rentrak/Comscore, tailing behind "Deadpool" – ahead of other Chinese New Year releases "The Monkey King 2", "From Vegas to Macau 3" and "Kung Fu Panda 3", which place third to fifth on the chart, respectively. "The Mermaid" tells the story of Hin and Shan. The former whose real estate project involves reclamation of the sea, and the latter a mermaid dispatched to stop him. The encounter soon leads to them falling for each other.
