7 Jun – The award-winning Malaysian film, "The Kid from the Big Apple" has been selected for screening at the 6th Kawaran Film Festival in Rome, Italy. The announcement was made on the official Facebook page of "The Kid from the Big Apple" and the film festival website which states that the film will make its Italian premiere this 8 June, 8.30pm at the courtyard of the Grazia elementary school. The Kawaran Fest will be held from 6 to 11 June. It is a highly esteemed Italian film festival devoted to the universal themes of unity, integration and the intermingling of cultures. The festival aims to encourage communion among the people of Torpignattara – one of the most multicultural districts in Rome that has a community made up of people from China, Malaysia, Bangladesh, Pakistan, Philippines, North Africa, Romania and more. "The Kid from the Big Apple" was written and directed by Jess Teong and was fully filmed in Malaysia. It stars child actor Sarah Tan as a young girl who has lived in New York all her life that has to suddenly move to rural Malaysia and stay with her traditional grandfather. This emotional family drama had snagged several awards at the 7th Macau International Movie Festival and the 28th Malaysian Film Festival. A sequel titled "Before We Forget" is already in the works and is expected to be released at the end of this year.
