6 Jun – We have recently learned that The Hunchback of Notre Dame and The Phantom of the Opera will be added to the list of monsters in the Dark Universe. The director and producer of the upcoming release of the Dark Universe's "The Mummy", has revealed some of the cards he has up his sleeve for the future of the Dark Universe in an interview with Fandom. "We know we're going to do Frankenstein, Bride of Frankenstein, Dracula, Creature from the Black Lagoon, Phantom of the Opera, The Hunchback of Notre Dame, Invisible Man," he said. Wow. That's a lot of monsters. Kurtzman is also one of the creative minds behind Universal's Dark Universe, so it's safe to say that his words can be taken without much salt. Kurtzman even said that they plan on expanding the cinematic universe by diving deep into the mythology of these characters and movies. "There are characters within those films that can grow and expand and maybe even spin off. I think that digging into deep mythologies about monsters around the world is fair game for us, as well and connecting the monsters that we know to some surprising monsters could also be really interesting."
Quasimodo, the Hunchback of Notre Dame and Erik, the Phantom of the Opera are two very similar characters in which they are labelled as 'monsters' feared by others because of their appearance and they both fall in love with a beautiful girl that they can never have. They can be considered special to Universal for they were the first two 'monsters' the studio produced movies of back in the 1920s. Both characters were played by the same silent film actor, Lon Chaney. At the moment, there has been no word as to who will play these characters in the Dark Universe, however Kurtzman has listed a slew of popular actors who he'd like to have join their project such as: Michael Fassbender, Jennifer Lawrence, Charlize Theron and Angelina Jolie. It is also unclear if Quasimodo and Erik would get their own movies or if they will just make an appearance on another monster's solo movie, such as how Russell Crowe's Dr Jekyll will appear in "The Mummy" as the leader of the mysterious organization Prodigium. The Dark Universe will make its debut with the release of "The Mummy" starring Tom Cruise as the soldier of fortune Nick Morton and Sofia Boutella as the titular monster on 8 June in Malaysia and Singapore and on 9 June in Cambodia. The movie will be followed by "The Bride of Frankenstein" in which Angelina Jolie is rumoured to star in. (Photo Source: Fandom)
