"X-Men" producer to make directorial debut with seventh instalment

"X-Men: Supernova" may focus on the Dark Phoenix story.

22 Feb – Previously, we brought news that the "X-Men" franchise is expanding with a seventh instalment which – "X-Men: Apocalypse" star Sophie Turner has confirmed – will begin filming this year.

Now word has it Simon Kinberg, long-time writer and producer of the superhero franchise, may be the one to helm the upcoming movie, according to Collider.

Kinberg has reportedly written the screenplay for the movie, currently titled "X-Men: Supernova", which will focus on the Dark Phoenix storyline. However, it is not yet confirmed whether Kinberg will get the green light from the studio to direct.

If he does get to sit in the director's chair, this will mark Kinberg's feature film directorial debut. Though fans may not have much to worry about since Kinberg should be well-versed with the "X-Men" universe, he has been heavily involved in it since 2006.

The 43-year-old joined the franchise as a writer for "X-Men: The Last Stand" (2006) and later returned for three more "X-Men" instalments, as producer for "X-Men: First Class" (2011) and writer-producer for both "X-Men: Days of Future Past" (2014) and "X-Men: Apocalypse" (2016).

He is also the producer for the R-rated success, "Deadpool" (2016), and Hugh Jackman-starrer, "Logan" (2017).

"X-Men: Supernova" is set to begin filming in June this year. While Turner is confirmed to reprise her role as Jean Grey, it is not yet known whether the other "Apocalypse" cast members would return.

The seventh movie is expected to bring something grittier to the table, since it would focus on Jean Grey's Dark Phoenix alter-ego. Before that happens, fans looking forward to a dark "X-Men" tale can tune in to "Logan" first, set to open in cinemas this March.
