The search for a "Black Widow" director is on

Scarlett Johansson will be headlining the "Black Widow" standalone movie.

22 Jun – Back in January, talks of Black Widow getting her own standalone movie was intensified when news spread that there were already writers attached to the project, despite it not being fully greenlit by Marvel Studios yet.

While back then Marvel was still hesitant about giving the superspy her own movie, it seems now that their wariness has dissipated because the project is definitely moving ahead as producer Kevin Feige and star Scarlett Johansson have been busy interviewing candidates to helm the movie.

Deadline first reported that Cate Shortland ("Berlin Syndrome") was being eyed for the project but later updated that Amma Asante ("Where Hands Touch"), Kimberly Peirce ("Boys Don't Cry") and Maggie Betts ("Novitiate") are the three filmmakers who have been shortlisted out of 49 candidates.

Jac Schaeffer ("Nasty Women", "The Shower") is still writing the standalone movie.

Black Widow made her first big screen appearance in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) in 2010's "Iron Man". She has so far appeared in eight MCU titles, including the recent "Avengers: Infinity War", and will be seen in the fourth "Avengers" movie that will be released in 2019.

Scarlett Johansson portrays the character in all the MCU movies.

The upcoming Black Widow movie, which will also have Johansson reprising the titular role, is set to be part of the MCU's Phase 4 lineup.
