James Gunn moves on to another superhero franchise

10 Oct – After the whole "Guardians of the Galaxy" debacle, James Gunn has now found himself a new superhero franchise to work on.

TheWrap is reporting that Gunn is in talks to pen the script for the next "Suicide Squad" instalment, which currently goes by "Suicide Squad 2".

It is reported that Gunn will have a completely new take on the characters and it might not be a direct follow-up, so there are speculations of the cast being replaced.

Though, a complete cast overhaul might be unlikely since the first movie featured a star-studded cast that included Will Smith as Deadshot and Margot Robbie as fans' favourite, Harley Quinn.

Dave Bautista, who's been very vocal against Gunn's firing from Disney's "Guardians of the Galaxy" franchise, seems happy that the director has found a new project as the actor is busy retweeting news of Gunn's "Suicide Squad 2" involvement, simply captioned, "Where do I sign up! (sic)"

There's a reason for that caption – it is also reported that Gunn might be taking on the directing role, too.

The second "Suicide Squad" movie has been on the lookout for a new helmer ever since it was confirmed that David Ayer was not returning to direct.

Last year, Mel Gibson and Jaume Collet-Serra both passed on the directing job and Gavin O'Connor was reportedly attached to helm instead. It looks like that's no longer the case now that Gunn might also be in talks to direct the second movie.

The first "Suicide Squad" was released in 2016 to not-so-lively reviews but still managed to gross USD746.8 million against its USD175 million budget.

A sequel has long been in the planning but kept being postponed due to various reasons but with this latest piece of news, at least fans' hopes of seeing it hit the big screen someday are renewed.
