13 Jun – It's no secret that Malaysia is a big fan of Indian superstar Rajinikanth and the nation's affection towards the actor is proven once again with the reception his latest movie has been receiving. "Kaala", which opened last week on 7 June, has to date collected RM4.5 million at the local box office. "We are hoping for another pickup this weekend," said Mr. Veera, General Manager of DMY Creation Sdn Bhd, the distributor of the film in Malaysia, when contacted by Cinema Online. He added that he is confident there will be a higher pickup this weekend due to it being a long Hari Raya weekend, when even those who have been abstaining from entertainment during Ramadan can also now enjoy "Kaala" in cinemas. The action movie placed second on its opening weekend in Malaysia, just behind another new entry, "Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom". It still managed to rake in RM1.1 million last weekend despite some stiff competition, not just from the aforementioned Hollywood blockbuster but also other movies such as "Deadpool 2", "Solo: A Star Wars Story" and "Veere Di Wedding". Worldwide, "Kaala" has recently crossed the Rs 100 crore mark, according to Andhra Box Office stats, as its current global gross stands at Rs. 112.2 crore.
