8 May – Veteran actress Datuk Lai Meng has passed away at the age of 90 due to critical illness. The late actress was reported to have breathed her last on the night of 6 May 2018, five days after she was admitted to hospital, Bernama reported. Born Lai Kwai Yoon, Datuk Lai Meng was more affectionately known as Lai Meng Yi or Aunty Lai Meng. She was conferred the title Datuk in 2013 by the Sultan of Pahang Sultan Ahmad Shah. Having retired only recently in January, the late actress made it into The Malaysia Book of Records in 2011 as the 'Longest Performing Artist' for her more than five decades of involvement in the entertainment industry. She debuted in the industry in the '50s through a radio comedy sketch and found her fame in the '60s with the popular TV series "Empat Sekawan". She later landed roles in various movies, including her Golden Horse-nominated portrayal of an Alzheimer's-ridden mother in Jack Neo's "Money No Enough 2". The late actress leaves behind a daughter, two sons and four grandchildren.
