13 Feb – Considering the billion-dollar success "Aladdin" managed to rake in at the box office last year, Disney and fans alike are no doubt wishing for another movie starring the titular street-rat and his blue genie pal. Thy wish will be granted as Variety just broke the news that a sequel to the 2019 movie is in the works. As the sequel is still in early development, no offer has been extended yet to stars Will Smith, who played Genie; Mena Massoud, who played Aladdin; and Naomi Scott, who played Princess Jasmine. Offers will only be made after a script is ready. It is also not confirmed whether Guy Ritchie will be back in the director's seat. It is only known at the moment that producers Dan Lin and Jonathan Eirich will be returning to produce through their Rideback banner, with Ryan Halprin joining as executive producer.
While the original 1992 animated movie that the 2019 live-action version is adapted from received sequels that are straight-to-video, the upcoming sequel will be released in cinemas instead of releasing only on the studio's streaming platform, Disney+. The live-action sequel will reportedly not be based on the animated straight-to-video follow-ups of 1992 "Aladdin". Released in cinemas in May last year, "Aladdin", produced on a USD183 million budget, made USD1.051 billion worldwide, making it the ninth highest-grossing movie of 2019. Aside from the sequel, there is also a spinoff movie in the works for Disney+, focusing on Billy Magnussen's Prince Anders.
