15 May – While talks of a spinoff focused on Imperator Furiosa have been around since the release of "Mad Max: Fury Road" five years ago, there's not been much update on the standalone movie's production.

That is until recently, when IndieWire reported that director George Miller has confirmed to New York Times that he is currently developing the project.

Since the movie is set to be a prequel exploring Furiousa's history, Charlize Theron is not expected to make a return despite her stellar portrayal of the war captain in the 2015 movie.

Miller said that he contemplated using CGI to de-age the 44-year-old actress for the new spinoff, as Martin Scorsese did with Robert De Niro in "The Irishman", but later decided to cast a younger actress instead.

"Despite the valiant attempts on 'The Irishman,' I think there's still an uncanny valley. Everyone is on the verge of solving it, particularly Japanese video-game designers, but there's still a pretty wide valley, I believe," he said.

There have been rumours since March that Anya Taylor-Joy ("The New Mutants", "Split") is being eyed to lead the Furiousa prequel.

Anya Taylor-Joy is rumoured to take on the younger Furiousa role in the upcoming "Mad Max" spinoff.

Even though he's working on a new cast, Miller will still be bringing in familiar faces to work on the project behind-the-scenes.

Among these are cinematographer John Seale, who has been semi-retired since wrapping "Mad Max: Fury Road", and Oscar-winning production designer Colin Gibson, who revealed that 135 vehicles were made for the 2015 movie and he is already planning more cars for the new spinoff.

However, the Furiousa prequel won't begin filming anytime soon. Miller is planning on filming it only after he wraps up the Tilda Swinton and Idris Elba-starring "Three Thousand Years of Longing", which will only begin production later this year.

Hopefully, fans won't have to wait a few more decades before the Furiousa prequel hits the big screen.
