Jamie Foxx's "Soul" gets pushed back five months

14 Apr – Walt Disney Studios has been busy rearranging its release schedule after most of its 2020 titles have to be delayed due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic.

Recent updates on Disney's Twitter reveal that two animated films, namely Pixar Animation Studios' "Soul" and Walt Disney Animation Studios' "Raya and the Last Dragon", have been moved to new dates.

"Soul", with Jamie Foxx voicing the lead role, was originally set for release in North American cinemas on 19 June 2020. It has now been pushed back five months to 20 November 2020.

The move displaces "Raya and the Last Dragon" from its original 25 November 2020 spot, pushing it to next year. The Awkwafina-starrer has now been given the new date of 12 March 2021.

Delaying the release of "Soul" is probably a good move, considering how moviegoers would be reluctant to return to cinemas so soon. Pixar's last release, "Onward", suffered at the box office despite being led by MCU favourites Tom Holland and Chris Pratt, since at the time of its release, many were already hesitant to be enclosed in confined spaces as COVID-19 cases spiked.

In "Soul", Foxx voices Joe Gardner, a music teacher whose soul gets separated from his body and he must find a way to return before it's too late. Meanwhile, Awkwafina voices the titular dragon in "Raya and the Last Dragon", pairing up with singer Cassie Steele who voices Raya, a warrior searching for the last dragon.

Just last week, Disney has also set new release dates for its Marvel movies and other live-action titles, including "Mulan" and "Black Widow". The Crystal Liu-starrer is optimistically aiming for a summer release while Scarlett Johansson's superhero solo vehicle is set for a fall release.
