"The New Mutants" still releasing in cinemas, gets new 2020 release date

Fifth release date's the charm for "The New Mutants"?
Fifth release date's the charm for "The New Mutants"?

14 May – The most important superpower for "The New Mutants" right now is probably securing a theatrical release that will not be delayed yet again.

Having been postponed for the fourth time back in March, the fate of the long-delayed superhero-horror film has remained uncertain since.

Finally, Variety reported today that Walt Disney Studios has given the "X-Men" spinoff a new theatrical release date and best of all, it will still be this year so fans wouldn't have to wait much longer.

This is a welcome news for fans, who have been worried that they might miss seeing it on the big screen as there had been rumours of the movie going straight to streaming instead of releasing in cinemas following its recent delay.

"The New Mutants" is now set to open in North American cinemas on 28 August 2020.

Now fans don't have to wait much longer to see the new mutants fighting The Smiley Men.

Previously, it was originally scheduled for release on 13 April 2018 but was later pushed to 22 February 2019 to avoid clashing with "Deadpool 2". Once again it was moved to 2 August 2019 to make way for "Dark Phoenix".

That also didn't pan out following Disney's acquisition of Fox and it had to be rescheduled to 3 April 2020, which, of course, was cancelled when cinemas worldwide started temporarily shuttering due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Cinemas, whether local or international, are expected to be fully operational again by then, so "The New Mutants" might still be able to attract a sizeable audience despite its much-delayed release.

Directed by Josh Boone, "The New Mutants" stars Anna Taylor-Joy ("Split"), Maisie Williams ("Game of Thrones"), Charlie Heaton ("Stranger Things"), Blu Hunt ("The Originals") and Henry Zaga ("13 Reasons Why") as young mutants who are held in an isolated hospital against their will.

Although long-rumoured to be an R-rated entry, it was confirmed by Boone back in early January that "the movie has always been and always will be PG-13. There was never a plan for an R-rated movie."
