1 Aug – Although there is still no update on the third instalment of the "Legally Blonde" franchise, Reese Witherspoon recently stated that her team is now inspired to do more for the project following the success of "Top Gun: Maverick". The actress and producer, who was asked about her iconic character Elle Woods in an interview with USA Today, stated, "I'm still hoping that Legally Blonde 3 is gonna come together in the right way." "It's just like Top Gun. They waited a long time to make another version of that movie, and I loved the nostalgia piece they incorporated in it. So definitely that gave us a lot of inspiration about what we would want to do with Elle Woods and make sure that we had all those same touchstones that mattered to people [back] then."
Witherspoon added that she is very protective of Elle and all of the other characters synonymous with "Legally Blonde", and that she would never make the subpar version of their story. It is noted that "Top Gun: Maverick" made USD 1.2 billion at the box office with a USD 170 million budget, and it took more than 30 years for the sequel to come following the release of the original movie back in 1986. Meanwhile, "Legally Blonde", which was released in 2001, is based on the 2001 Amanda Brown novel of the same name. The sequel was released in 2003, while its musical premiered in 2007. In May 2020, it was announced that Mindy Kaling and Dan Goor were signed to write a third film.
