6 Jul – "Barney & Friends", but according to Mattel's Kevin McKeon, the upcoming movie about the purple dinosaur will instead be focusing on the adults. The film producer and vice president of Mattel Films revealed in a recent interview that the upcoming project will be an "A24-type" project, referring to the studio that brought "Everything Everywhere All At Once" and "Hereditary", and that the movie will be surrealistic. "We're leaning into the millennial angst of the property rather than fine-tuning this for kids," he said. "It's really a play for adults. Not that it's R-rated, but it'll focus on some of the trials and tribulations of being thirtysomething, growing up with Barney - just the level of disenchantment within the generation."
He then added that Mattel is here "to make art". Not much has been released about the upcoming movie, except that it will star Daniel Kaluuya ("Black Panther") in the lead. "Barney" is one of the many Mattel movies in the works, aside from "Barbie", which will be released this month, as well as "Polly Pocket", "Rock 'Em Sock 'Em Robots", and "Uno".
