China's Oscar submission disqualified for not meeting requirements

"The Sinking of Lisbon Maru" did not meet the language requirement
29 Oct - It looks like China will be out of the Oscar race as its Best International Feature Film entry has been deemed ineligible by the Film Academy.

China's submission, Fang Li's "The Sinking of the Lisbon Maru" was deemed to have failed to meet the minimum language requirement for the category, which stipulated that a film must have "a predominantly (more than 50 percent) non-English dialogue track" to be eligible.

However, since China submitted the film just before the 2 October deadline, it is too late for the country to resubmit with a different movie.

The said documentary revolves around the Lisbon Maru, known as the "ship of death" that transported prisoners of war between Hong Kong and Japan, which was unwittingly torpedoed by a US submarine.

Last year, China submitted the sci-fi film, "The Wandering Earth 2" as its representative work for the category. The film did not make it to the top five.

"The Wandering Earth 2" was sent by China for last year's race
