18 Oct - Netizens couldn't help but expressed surprise, after Cynthia Erivo shared her response to the fan edited version of her upcoming movie, "Wicked" that went viral on social media.

A fan of the original Broadway show (that was adapted from the book written by Gregory Maguire) recently decided to share a video of them doing their own edits on the official poster of the movie adaptation, which had Erivo's character Elphaba staring into the camera while Ariana Grande's Glinda whispering in her ears.

The said fan decided instead to edit it so that it will resemble the Broadway playbill more - that is by obscuring her eyes under her witch's hat, and changing her green lips to red.

While many thought it was nothing more but innocent fun, the actress seemed to not share the same opinion, as she took to Instagram Story and calling it the most offensive thing she has ever seen.

"Equal to that awful AI of us fighting, equal to people post the question 'is your ***** green'. None of this is funny. None of it is cute. It degrades me. It degrades us," Erivo argued.

"The original poster is an illustration. I am a real-life human being, who chose to look right down the barrel of the camera to you, the viewer ... because without words we communicate with our eyes. Our poster is an homage not an imitation, to edit my face and hide my eyes is to erase me. And that is just deeply hurtful," Erivo added.

The response seemed to rub many the wrong way, with some netizens saying that Erivo was making a mountain out of a molehill.

"This doesn't bode well for the movie," said one netizen. "A good intentioned piece of fan art, that seeks to further evoke the spirit of the original production, which is the purpose of the movie poster itself, gets this kind of vitriolic response?"

"I think she probably needs to learn some perspective if someone editing a poster to imitate an iconic image offends her," said another.

The first part of "Wicked" will be released on 21 November.
