12 Mar – Following the success of "The Super Mario Bros Movie", Nintendo announced that a second movie is now in the works. Sharing the good news during a Mario Day video on 10 March, game director Shigeru Miyamoto and Illuminations' Chris Meledandri said that Aaron Horvath and Michael Jelenic will return as co-directors for the sequel. "Our team of animators are already busy at work storyboarding scenes and developing set designs for new environments. We start animation soon, and rest assured we'll be obsessing over every detail to get it just right," said Meledandri.
The first movie, which has Chris Pratt and Charlie Day voicing Mario and Luigi, made over USD 1 billion last year, and was 2023's biggest movie before it was overtaken by "Barbie". The second film, which Miyamoto said will broaden Mario's world further, is slated for 3 April 2026 release.
