22 Apr - In conjunction with the visit of Chinese President H.E. Xi Jinping to Malaysia, the acclaimed Chinese opera film "White Snake" officially premieres in the country. This event highlights the unique appeal of traditional Cantonese opera while fostering cultural exchange between Malaysia and China. Presented by Juxta Films, "White Snake" premiered on 17 April at DADI Cinema Pavilion Kuala Lumpur. This film is a collaboration among Zhujiang Film Group, Guangdong Cantonese Opera Theatre, and Foshan Cultural Tourism Co., Ltd., directed by Zhang Xianfeng and written by Mo Fei. Starring renowned national actors Zeng Xiaomin and Wen Ruqing, the film also features performances by Wang Yanfei and Zhu Hongxing. Since its release in China in 2021, "White Snake" has received significant acclaim, winning various prestigious awards, including Outstanding Feature Film at the 19th China Huabiao Film Awards and nominations at the 32nd China Golden Rooster Awards.
Jon Chiew, founder of Juxta Films, emphasised that the film showcases a cultural treasure and bridges the deep-rooted tradition of Cantonese opera in Malaysia, which dates back to the 1920s. He expressed hopes that the premiere would enrich cultural exchanges between the two nations. "White Snake" is based on "The Legend of the White Snake," one of China's four great love folktales. The film combines traditional Cantonese opera techniques with modern cinematic storytelling, creating a visually captivating experience. Director Zhang Xianfeng collaborated with special effects teams from Australia, New Zealand, and Shenzhen, China, focusing on classical Chinese aesthetics to enhance the film's poetic ambiance.
The premiere was attended by representatives from various film production companies, Chinese associations, and cultural institutions in Malaysia. Characters from the film, dressed in traditional costumes, interacted with the audience, providing an immersive cultural experience. The release of "White Snake" marks a significant step in promoting traditional Chinese culture and strengthening Malaysia-China relations. Following the premiere, representatives from Juxta Films and Zhujiang Film Production Co., Ltd. met with the CEO of FINAS (National Film Development Corporation Malaysia) Dato' Azmir Saifuddin Bin Mutalib, to explore deeper cultural collaborations. Dato' Azmir praised the film for rejuvenating cultural heritage and attracting younger audiences.
"White Snake" will be screened in selected Malaysian cinemas starting 24 April. In a unique extension of its cultural campaign, "White Snake" has teamed up with Guangdong Lingnantong Co., Ltd. to introduce a special co-branded travel card, the Lingnan Pass. Accepted in over 330 cities across China, as well as in Hong Kong and Macau, this card offers seamless travel solutions for Malaysian tourists, especially following the recent mutual visa exemption between Malaysia and China. This initiative underscores the film's role in promoting cultural ties and enhancing travel opportunities between the two countries.
