17 Oct - Diane Keaton's family has finally spoken out following news of her untimely passing.

In a statement released exclusively to PEOPLE, the actress' family confirmed that she died of pneumonia on 11 October.

"The Keaton family are very grateful for the extraordinary messages of love and support they have received these past few days on behalf of their beloved Diane, who passed away from pneumonia on October 11," reads the statement.

"She loved her animals and she was steadfast in her support of the unhoused community, so any donations in her memory to a local food bank or an animal shelter would be a wonderful and much appreciated tribute to her," they added.

News of Keaton's passing first broke on 11 October. However, the family did not specify the cause at the time and had asked for privacy.

Sources only told the media that her health had declined "very suddenly".

She was 79.
