Joseph Zada to star in the Haymitch Abernathy origin story

25 Apr - "Invisible Boys" actor Joseph Zada has recently been cast to star in "Hunger Games: Sunrise on the Reaping", the movie adaptation of Susan Collins' second prequel novel to her original "The Hunger Games" trilogy.

The actor will be playing the role of Haymitch Abernathy, a fan favourite character whose older version as played by Woody Harrelson in the original trilogy.

It is noted that the novel focuses on Haymitch's journey, starting on the morning of the reaping of the 50th Hunger Games, also known as the Second Quarter Quell, when Haymitch competes. This takes place in Panem 24 years before the events of "The Hunger Games", where Haymitch plays the role as Katniss Everdeen's mentor.

Zada is cast alongside Whitney Peak, who will play the role of Haymitch's girlfriend, Lenore Dove Baird.

"The Hunger Games franchise has long been a launching pad for remarkable young actors, and Jo and Whitney carry that legacy forward with incredible heart, depth, and fire," said co-president of Lionsgate Motion Picture Group Erin Westerman. "After auditioning hundreds of gifted performers from around the world, these two stood out - not just for their talent, but for the emotional truth they brought to these iconic roles."

The film is slated for 20 November 2026 release.
