21 Jul - James Gunn recently addressed the previous controversy surrounding the confusion of Henry Cavill's supposed return as Superman.

Speaking to Josh Horowitz on his "Happy Sad Confused" podcast, Gunn noted the comeback announcement made by Cavill following his Man of Steel appearance on Dwayne Johnson's "Black Adam", which he said happened while he and Peter Safran were negotiating about taking over DC Studios.

"We were figuring out what our deals would be, and the day our deal closed, all of a sudden they were announcing that Henry was back," he said.

Gunn said that he and Safran was taken aback by the announcement, as they have their own plans when it comes to the new DC Universe.

"That was really unfortunate, I'm like, this poor guy. And so Peter and I [knew] the right thing to do is to sit down with [Cavill] and talk to him," he said. "And we sat down, we talked to him, he was an absolute gentleman, a great guy about it. He said, 'The only thing I ask is that I'm able to reveal it myself as opposed to it coming from you guys.'"

Gunn stated that it was unfair for Cavill that he became the victim of outside influences who were forcing their way into the DC Universe.

Although Gunn did not name any parties, many believed that he was referring to Dwayne Johnson, who at the time was trying to have a larger role in the DC Universe through "Black Adam". However, the film did not do well at the box office, making only USD 393.5 million at the box office.

When asked if he would recast Cavill in another role for his and Safran's version of DCU, he responded, "I talked to him about it on that day. I would love to put Henry in something."
