20 Jun - Tom Cruise has been named one of the recipients of the Oscar's Honorary Awards.

The "Mission: Impossible" star is joined by actress-producer Debbie Allen and production designer Wynn Thomas, who will be accepting the same recognition, as well as legendary singer-songwriter Dolly Parton, who will be awarded the Jean Hersholt Humanitarian Award.

The news was announced by Academy President Janet Yang, saying, "This year's Governors Awards will celebrate four legendary individuals whose extraordinary careers and commitment to our filmmaking community continue to leave a lasting impact."

Speaking about Cruise, she stated, "Tom Cruise's incredible commitment to our filmmaking community, to the theatrical experience, and to the stunts community has inspired us all."

It is noted that the Honorary Award is given "to honour extraordinary distinction in lifetime achievement, exceptional contributions to the state of motion picture arts and sciences, or outstanding service to the Academy."

Previous recipients include Charlie Chaplin, Walt Disney, Sidney Poitier, Steve Martin, and Quincy Jones, the latter who was recognised last year.

As one of the last "movie stars", Cruise is one of the few actors of his generation who can still manage to bring in box office successes. His 2022 movie, "Top Gun: Maverick" brought in USD 1.496 billion at the box office.
