16 Apr - The National Film Development Corporation of Malaysia (FINAS) is now collaborating with local universities, including Multimedia University (MMU), in its effort to formulate measures to strengthen the development of the country's creative industry.

Its chairman, Datuk Hans Isaac, who was seen at the MOU signing ceremony between FINAS and the Multimedia University (MMU), said that there is a need for collaboration between industry players and the younger generation, in line with technological advances directed towards Artificial Intelligence (AI).

"As we know, the country's creative industry is currently focused on AI that can be used in animation and future technologies such as Extended Reality (XR), Virtual Reality (VR) and Visual Effects (VFX)," said Hans. "MMU, through its Cinematic Art and Creative Multimedia is found to provide opportunities for artistes to learn and practice the skills provided."

Also present at the event were MMU Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Professor Datuk Mazliham Mohd Su'ud and FINAS CEO Datuk Azmir Saifuddin Mutalib.

According to Hans, the collaboration reflects an integrated approach between the creative industry and academia in producing talent to meet the needs of the global industry driven by digital technology.

"FINAS wants to see this industry continue to grow rapidly in line with the global technological revolution. Therefore, we always try to provide inputs such as access to professional networks and opportunities in the creative sector, while MMU contributes academic expertise, research and technological facilities," he said.

Meanwhile, Prof Mazliham said that MMU is optimistic about this cooperation.

"At MMU, we always place a major emphasis on the practical or 'hands-on' learning element in every program offered to interested students. In fact, our main focus is to ensure that students do not just have theory, but are truly prepared to drive success when they step into the creative industry," he said.
