12 Aug - Mel Gibson has an update on the fifth instalment of "Lethal Weapon," saying that it will be different from the last four films.

In a new interview, the actor, who played former Special Forces soldier Martin Riggs in the franchise, stated that the characters are now older, with one of them already retired and another doing a desk job.

"It doesn't get into the big explosions and all this sort of stuff. But it still has the energy and, I think, drive of a big action film," he enthused, adding that the movie will be a story all on its own instead of being another version of the other films.

As for the action scenes, Gibson said, "It's a foot chase, right? But it's kind of filmed like a car chase. So it still has all the elements of what was in the other films, but not nearly so complicated. But it deals more about the people in it."

The actor also stated that he will be happy to direct the film, as it was something that the late Richard Donner had said he should do.

"And, you know, when he passed away, I didn't say anything. But apparently, he had told other people that too, so they all came to me and said, 'You direct it.' I said, 'Yeah, okay.'"

It is noted that production has not started due to an studio internal situation, though Gibson believes that things may change once Paramount and Warner Bros. settle the issues with their merger.

"Lethal Weapon," which co-stars Danny Glover, was first released in 1987. It spawned three other sequels released in 1989, 1992 and 1998.
