With the upcoming release of "Rapunzel: A Tangled Tale" in cinemas, Disney will christen the golden-haired and freckled spunky girl as the tenth (and possibly the youngest) princess to join the official Disney Princesses line-up.

Let's take a look at how far Disney princesses (and their princes) have grown from the ever classical fairy tale settings to urban New Orleans and back to an enchanted, magical kingdom.

Snow White & The Seven Dwarves (1937)

Snow White & The Prince

Show White is the oldest princess to be animated ever. With skin white as snow, lips red like a ruby, she is the pioneer of all tragic heroines in Disney history.

She wishes on a wishing well and dreams that 'someday her prince will come' everyday.

But here's the sad part: The Prince (who is not even named) didn't do much but just serenade the girl secretly, disappear only to reappear again towards the end just to give her first love's kiss that will break the evil stepmother's curse.

Where was he when she was about to be killed by a hunter and almost got her heart tore open for the evil Queen's sick pleasure?

Face it; this would be the first and the most useless prince to ever exist in the Disney history. Even the seven dwarves did a lot more to save Snow White.

But in the end, the "Prince" gets to ride towards the sunset with the princess in his arms. Just because he's a prince, huh?

Cinderella (1950)

Cinderella & Prince Charming

An abused orphan girl who grew up enslaved in her own home by an evil stepmother with excess baggage in the form of two ugly stepsisters and an evil cat named Lucifer, but still loving them despite all that.

The sweetest, kind-hearted girl whom blessed by her own Fairy Godmother, managed to meet her one and only Prince Charming at a ball where he (conveniently) needs to find an eligible maiden to make his wife.

Cinderella arrives in her pumpkin carriage, catches Prince Charming's eye and dances the night away together but having to part before the clock strikes twelve.

As she runs off, accidently leaving behind her glass slipper and the Prince goes on a rampant search for his mysterious dream girl.

He is adamant in finding Cinderella but apparently doesn't have enough memory to remember her face.

It's either Cinderella has a weird feet size or he's just too mesmerised by her beauty that he couldn't even ask for her name.

Seriously, Prince Charming could do better as a man and it was proven in Cinderella's third movie, "Cinderella III: A Twist of Time".

Time was reversed by the evil stepmother resulting in him never meeting Cinderella but his heart still tells him she's the one. Sweet. Now that's a real true love.

Sleeping Beauty (1959)

Princess Aurora & Prince Phillip

The princess blessed with a beauty of a rose and a sweet voice like a nightingale until a disgruntled evil witch cursed the infant princess Aurora to die on her sixteenth birthday by pricking her finger on a spinning wheel.

But the timely intervention by her third fairy changed the possible doom from death into an eternal slumber until a kiss from a true love shall wake her up.

Fast forward 16 years later, the princess, who has to live in hiding as a peasant named Briar Rose met a stranger in the woods, fell in love (not knowing it was her betrothed, Prince Phillip) before having her hopes crushed when she needed to return to her royal parents.

Phillip fell in love with the peasant girl, dared to defy his own father, the king and risked of being disowned just so he could be with his true love. Lucky for him, it was the same person all along and the fairies were there to assist him.

A man who's willing to leave his own kingdom to be with a girl of a lower stature is a great man indeed. Toast to Prince Phillip.

The Little Mermaid (1989)

Princess Ariel & Prince Eric

The daughter of the King of the seven seas, Ariel is the odd one in her family of merpeople - a disgrace due to her fascination with humans.

She saved a prince from drowning, fell in love and went as far as asking the sea witch Ursula to turn her into a human with a catch: her voice as mortgage and it's only for three days.

No kiss from Prince as the sun sets on the third day, no happy ending. Not knowing it was the same girl, Prince Eric had actually gave up on his 'mysterious' saviour and decided that he could truly love the mute human Ariel until the horrid envious witch disguised herself as a beautiful girl and abused Ariel's voice to hypnotise Eric.

No one can blame him for being bewitched. But when the helpless Ariel fought for Eric's heart, the spell was broken and Eric wasted no time in killing the villain (by coincidence saving the mer-kingdom and winning the Sea King's approval in the process). Go Eric!

Together, this inter-species union spawned a sequel and a daughter, Melody. If that is not a perfect happy ending, then what is?

Beauty And The Beast (1991)

Belle & Beast

She was a small town genius inventor's daughter, a down-to-earth true dreamer who loves reading (and the princess who made a cameo in another Disney movie, "The Hunchback Of Notre Dame").

When her father was held captive by a beast, Belle willingly took her father's place in the enchanted castle.

From a captive she became a companion, successfully softening the rough exterior of the frightening Beast.

As much as he loves her, Beast still lets Belle go back to his sick father expecting that she will never come back let alone loving a Beast like him.

Towards the end, he is a true gentleman who fights the guy who wants his girl fairly and proved that a beast on the outside can be as much as a human on the inside.

His curse was lifted when Belle professed her genuine feelings during his dying moments.

He turned back to his original self, Prince Adam and got to spend his happy ending with the girl he loves and the other occupants of his castle.

Aladdin (1992)

Princess Jasmine & Aladdin

She might not be featured as the title role but Jasmine is a princess with an ambition: to be able to make her own decisions and yearns for a freedom outside the Maharajah's castle unlike other princesses who only waits to be rescued.

While Aladdin is a beggar on the streets of Agrabah, stealing from market vendors just to feed himself and his pet monkey Abu.

The street rat with a heart of gold, Aladdin was the only 'diamond in the rough' that could enter the Cave of Wonders.

Though his innocence caused him to be tricked by the evil vizier Jafar, his luck leads him to a magic carpet and Genie of the magic lamp inside the Cave which changed his life forever.

He made a mistake by thinking that the princess is really shallow by lying about his true self and pretending to be a prince in order to win her heart, but Aladdin later learns he made a mistake and decided that being honest is always the best.

He used his wit to defeat the bad guy and got the princess in the end. A classic pauper to prince tale which had produced mini television series and two more movies before he can finally settle down with his princess and live happily forever in their 'Whole New World' together.

By far, Aladdin is the Prince with most actions ever.

Pocahontas (1995)

Pocahontas & John Smith

The daughter of a Native American tribe chief Powhatan, Pocahontas is the toughest Princess in the wilderness.

The daredevil who dares to go 'just around the river bend' for new adventures had one day, found her match in a Virginia Company Englishman, the dashing John Smith.

Interestingly enough, this particular Disney Princess has two love interests.

The only couple who did not end up together considering Pocahontas married another British man named John Rolfe in the sequel, "Pocahontas II: Journey To A New World".

Pocahontas goes to London as a diplomat to stop a potential attack upon her people. There, she is accompanied by John Rolfe and slowly develops a romance with him.

In the end, she is reunited with John Smith, but explains to him that they are no longer following the same path that they went on years ago.

However, the Disney Princess franchise keeps John Smith and Pocahontas as an official couple, completely ignoring John Rolfe.

Mulan (1998)

Fa Mulan is the tomboy of the Disney princesses and undeniably the only Asian princess in the whole line-up.

She dresses up in a man's garb and disguises herself as a man named Ping to take her elderly father's place in the war against the invading Hun army.

A girl who was raised in a traditional Chinese setting, she yearns to break free from all tradition that confines a lady's stature of not being able to decide for her own life.

Although it was rather vague as to how Mulan ascended the throne of 'royalty', one can bet that her courage and extraordinary ingenuity which led the army to victory is responsible for that.

Mulan stands out strong so much on her own that her chemistry with her general and love interest Li Shang was even colder than an ice cube in the animated movie and only managed to warm up a little bit in the sequel, "Mulan II".

Princess And The Frog (2009)

Tiana & Prince Naveen

She was a waitress in humble town New Orleans with simple but big dreams: to open her own restaurant and make delicious gumbo for people to enjoy.

The most practical princess ever created by Disney, Tiana challenged her fairy tale counterpart by representing the modern world female society: working hard to fulfil her dreams and sacrificing her social life while at it. Falling in love is not even in her books!

Naveen is a spoilt prince who spends most of his time and money canoodling with girls, having fun and playing music. Eventually he got disowned by his father and decides to build a life by finding a rich wife.

But just before the story gets cliché and you start to hate the prince, he was turned into a frog by a witch doctor.

Mistaking a costumed Tiana as a real princess, he bargained financial assistance for a kiss to break the spell causing her to be affected as well.

This couple started out with a love-hate relationship but soon find enlightenment and love in each other.

Even Naveen was planning to propose to frog Tiana (with his self-made ring!) but decided not to when he found out she has only one dream to make her happy.

In the end, Tiana was willing to sacrifice everything and stayed as a frog forever as long as she is with her true love, Naveen once she realised what she wants might not be what she needed.

She needed love, found it and kept it. Her dreams unknowingly followed soon after as she married Naveen, broke the spell, got to open her own restaurant 'Tiana's Palace' and lived happily (and moderately) ever after.

Rapunzel: A Tangled Tale (2010)

Rapunzel & Flynn

The latest couple to join the Disney kingdom, Rapunzel is the born-princess who was stolen and locked away in a tower.

Not knowing about the outside world, just like Princess Jasmine, she yearns for adventures and freedom.

Her journey soon started when a smashing rogue named Flynn sneaked into her imprisonment trying to use her dungeon as a hideout.

The youngest couple to join the official line-up, could Rapunzel and Flynn live up to the standards of their predecessors?

The answer soon will be revealed when "Rapunzel : A Tangled Tale" weaves into cinemas on 25 November 2010!
