Meet the "Worst" characters of "Suicide Squad"

The members of the "Suicide Squad" team.

When comes to comic book movies, it's the superhero(es) who usually gets all the credit. Besides, it's all about good triumphing over evil, right? Well, at least not for this upcoming DC Extended Universe (DCEU) blockbuster known as "Suicide Squad".

First appearing in DC's "The Brave And The Bold #25" in 1959, "Suicide Squad" has since appeared in various forms including the 2014 animated feature, "Batman: Assault on Arkham" and even in the "Justice League Unlimited" series.

Now with their first live-action debut already realised, it's time to meet these "worst" characters below.

1. Harley Quinn (Margot Robbie)

Margot Robbie as Harley Quinn in "Suicide Squad".

Otherwise known as Dr Harleen Quinzel, Harley Quinn is a former Arkham Asylum psychiatrist. While treating her patient, the Joker, she ends up falling madly in love with him. She is eventually driven mad by the Joker and he turns her into a twisted sidekick.

Of all the "Suicide Squad" members, Harley Quinn is often credited as the fan favourite ever since she became so popular in "Batman: The Animated Series". She is, of course, easily recognised by her trademark red and black jester suit. Now, current in-demand Australian actress Margot Robbie has the privilege to play the iconic female supervillain for the first time ever in the live-action version. From the day she was announced as Harley Quinn to the subsequent promos showing her in action, netizens are already spreading positive vibes over Robbie's wacky performance. And in case you're wondering why Harley Quinn's costume in the live-action version looks significantly different in a more skimpy makeover than the traditional one from the animated series, that is because it was actually inspired by the New 52 series.

2. Deadshot (Will Smith)

Will Smith as Deadshot in "Suicide Squad".

His real name is Floyd Lawton, for which his alter ego Deadshot is known for his expert marksmanship. He is a skilled assassin who never misses a shot and he's highly experienced in using all kinds of firearms. Despite the brutal nature of his job, he is actually a killer with a heart of gold who loves his young daughter very much.

Will Smith is easily the biggest name in the ensemble cast of "Suicide Squad". Throughout his storied career, he is primarily known for playing the good guy in many blockbusters. With Deadshot, it's nice to see him playing an anti-hero for a change since 2008's "Hancock".

3. Captain Boomerang (Jai Courtney)

Jai Courtney as Captain Boomerang in "Suicide Squad".

Also known as Boomerang, his real name is George "Digger" Harkness and he's very good in – what else – throwing boomerangs! He used to live in poverty in the Australian Outback when he was a child. Thanks to his nifty boomerang skill, he is subsequently hired as a circus performer and eventually became a supervillain.

Played by Jai Courtney, he finally brings Captain Boomerang to life with an eccentric mix of bonkers personality. Here's hoping Courtney would be able to nail the role, especially after he became part of the culprits for botching two popular franchises including "A Good Day To Die Hard" (2013) and "Terminator Genisys" (2015).

4. El Diablo (Jay Hernandez)

Jay Hernandez as El Diablo in "Suicide Squad".

From Lazarus Lane to Rafael Sandoval, the identity of El Diablo has been adopted over the course of these two different individuals. The third person taking over as the new El Diablo is Chato Santana, a former gangster who becomes one following his encounter with Lazarus Lane in a hospital. El Diablo's power is pyrokinesis, in which he able to create and manipulate fire at his own will.

The role of Chato Santana in "Suicide Squad" is played by Jay Hernandez, who first made his Hollywood breakthrough alongside Kirsten Dunst in 2001's romantic drama, "Crazy/Beautiful". He can be seen in other stuff such as "Friday Night Lights", "Hostel", "Hostel: Part II" and "World Trade Center".

5. Killer Croc (Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje)

Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje as Killer Croc in "Suicide Squad".

Born with a rare genetic disorder that gives him a hideous reptilian appearance, Waylon Jones is a subject of bully and domestic abuse by his own aunt since childhood. As an adult, he becomes a crocodile wrestler and eventually turns into a supervillain a.k.a. Killer Croc where he often fights against his common enemy, Batman.

In "Suicide Squad" where Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje plays Killer Croc, his character is more than just a cold-blooded villain. According to Akinnuoye-Agbaje himself during an interview, Killer Croc is "not a crocodile, but a man who just wants to be loved". And just so you know, what you see in the previews so far is not a product of CG wizardry. Instead, Akinnuoye-Agbaje's Killer Croc is meticulously created using hours of makeup effect!

6. Enchantress (Cara Delevingne)

Cara Delevingne as Enchantress in "Suicide Squad".

True to her name, Enchantress is a powerful sorceress who is able to manipulate all sorts of magical powers. Her real name is June Moore, who first became Enchantress after being possessed by a demon while attending a costume party at an old castle.

Played by British model-turned-actress Cara Delevingne, her role as Enchantress in "Suicide Squad" is simply among her high-profile characters thus far. The "Paper Town" star will be next seen in 2017's "Valerian And The City Of A Thousand Planets".

7. Slipknot (Adam Beach)

Adam Beach as Slipknot in "Suicide Squad".

A former chemical engineer who successfully formulated highly-durable ropes, Christopher Weiss uses his skill to his advantage by becoming a costumed assassin. As Slipknot, he would utilise his ropes to strangle his victims and is also very good in tying knots.

The role of Slipknot is played by Adam Beach, whose costume appearance in "Suicide Squad" won't be the same colourful version seen in the comic book version. Instead, Beach's Slipknot will be dressed like a heavy-duty military operative.

8. Katana (Karen Fukuhara)

Karen Fukuhara as Katana in "Suicide Squad".

Otherwise known as Tatsu Yamashiro, Katana is a highly-skilled martial artist and samurai warrior serving as Rick Flag's (Joel Kinnaman) bodyguard. Her primary weapon is her Soultaker blade, a mystical sword capable of trapping the soul of every person she kills.

As Katana, Japanese-American actress Karen Fukuhara will make her big screen debut in "Suicide Squad".

9. Rick Flag (Joel Kinnaman)

Joel Kinnaman as Rick Flag in "Suicide Squad".

While Rick Flag is technically not a supervillain per se, his character remains crucial in "Suicide Squad". Flag is a dedicated military officer and also a field leader who ensures the members of the Suicide Squad team are doing their jobs. Although he possesses no super powers, he remains skilful enough in weaponry and hand-to-hand combat.

A role originally reserved for Tom Hardy before he choose to drop out, Swedish actor Joel Kinnaman takes over as Rick Flag. Best known in the "Easy Money" a.k.a. "Snabba Cash" trilogy and "Robocop" reboot as well as TV's "The Killing", Kinnaman actually trained hard with real Navy SEALs in order to prepare for his physically-demanding role in "Suicide Squad".

10. Amanda Waller (Viola Davis)

Viola Davis as Amanda Waller in "Suicide Squad".

What's a Suicide Squad without nary a mention of Amanda Waller? After all, she is the brainchild who assembled all the imprisoned supervillains to work for her. She may not possess any super power, but she's resourceful and smart enough as a ruthless government agent who doesn't mind getting her hands dirty. She is basically the queen of the whole operation who decides whether or not the lives of the Squad members would be spared or executed.

Played by Viola Davis, she looks like a perfect fit playing a tough female role like Amanda Waller. Previously nominated twice for Oscars in "Doubt" (2009) and "The Help" (2011), Davis is no doubt a versatile actress whose illustrious acting resume speaks for itself. She also can be seen on TV's "How To Get Away With Murder".

11. The Joker (Jared Leto)

Jared Leto as The Joker in "Suicide Squad".

Now, The Joker is actually not part of the "Suicide Squad". But in this live-action version, his appearance happens to be a crucial character nonetheless. The Joker's identity is varied from one individual to another. But here's the basic fact about this lethal jokester anyway: He's mad and crazy. He has no sense of remorse when torturing and/or killing his victims. And as every DC fan would know, he's the main adversary of Batman. Not to mention his sidekick-in-crime is his equally psychotic Harley Quinn.

Whether it was the comics, animations, TV series or movies, The Joker is easily the most popular and recognisable antagonist among all DC's gallery of supervillains. We have already seen various cinematic incarnations of The Joker famously played by Jack Nicholson in Tim Burton's "Batman" (1989) and the late Heath Ledger in Christopher Nolan's "The Dark Knight" (2008). Following Ledger's iconic performance that won him a posthumous Oscar for Best Supporting Actor, it is definitely a tough act for whoever that's stepping into his shoes. Now, rising to the challenge is Jared Leto, who famously won an Oscar for his transgender role in "Dallas Buyers Club" (2013). In "Suicide Squad", Leto's version of The Joker is inspired mainly by two comic books including Frank Miller's "The Dark Knight Returns" as well as Brian Azzarello and Lee Bermejo's "Joker".

"Suicide Squad" opens in cinemas nationwide on 4 August 2016.
