What lies beneath "Belukar"?

Daphne Iking plays a professional con artist.

Q: Can you describe your character in the movie?
A: I play Eva, a professional con artist who cons people's insurance money and is at her last job. It is what she wants to do before she retires and that's when she meets Nik, an investigator who is going to nab her and unexpectedly falls in love. I think Eva is very different because once you watch the whole movie, you realise that there is always a back-story. There is always a reason why a person acts in a certain way. No matter how good or how bad or how repent has done to a person, there is a reason why everything happens and the same goes for Eva and Nik.

Q: What were the challenges you've faced while portraying Eva?
A: Number one, I don't act. So the fact that I had to be someone else that I am not was a challenge by itself. Besides that, working with new people, even though they were great! Bront and I just hit it off immediately. I have never known him before and everyone was talking about us. The reason why we hit it off immediately is because he is such an intelligent guy and I love him and of course I had director Jason Chong so it helped.

Q: Was it hard to be immersed in that role?
A: I liked the fighting scene because I could whole-heartedly unleash my anger. It was easy because of what was happening in my life that time. Eva has been misconstrued as this evil con artist who is such a mean bitch, when actually she is your normal 'kampung' girl who just fell in love with this guy who happened to leave her.

Q: Since you mentioned that there are a lot of 'firsts' in this movie, how was it working with director Jason Chong?
A: I have worked with him for some television reality show so that was fine. That was how I got to know him!

Q: How was your first time working with Bront Palarae?
A: Working with that idiot? (laughs) Just kidding, Bront was easy because he has acted before but regarding the method of acting, I was like "Dude, I don't understand your technical terms or all the bullshit ones". I don't understand all this as I was not from an acting school, so he told me to just be you and that was the best advice he could give.

Q: Did you feel awkward being with Bront in that steamy bathroom scene?
A: Yes, I did. You know in my predicament if there are men with wives or girlfriends, you would be scared because you don't want to offend anyone. So I said, "Got girlfriend a not?" He said "Yes". Is she fierce? Would she beat me up? So I had to make it very clear. We tried to make it in a really relax manner and I think that's when we sort of broke the ice because I remember it was at Zailani's office where I first met Bront. He is also a comedian so that helps. I was already going through my own bloody divorce, I don't want to see any men, but I have to be next to this joker. I said come on, we have to be lovers but he keeps making all this jokes that doesn't help. I had to get into character so I was prepping myself the night before when I knew that scene was going to take place. By the time I appeared on set, I was ready for that scene but he wasn't! During the shoot, he was saying, "Don't touch me there. You know I am like getting turned on man." It was hilarious! That scene was intense because I was suppose to harass him in that scene and it didn't help that Jason would say, "You think Bront is your son is it? The way you touch him is like touching your son la and please be more sensual". I think that was one of the most awkward scenes I ever had to do.

Q: How many takes were needed for the bathroom scene?
A: I think we took at least six takes because Bront was just being an ass, he was just laughing and making me laugh as well.

Q: What other scenes were tough to film?
A: Me jumping off a jetty because judging by the height, it looked like I was going to jump off a bloody ferry! I said told Jason, "I can't jump this, there are boats and everything here." Jason replied by saying not to worry as we've checked with the divers. At that moment, Kin Wah just arrived and Jason said that you know he is a serious actor so please don't play a fool. I felt pressured because he doesn't like wannabe actresses. I gathered my courage and jumped off.

Daphne Iking, Bront Palarae and Sabrina Hassan at the "Belukar" press conference. Daphne's upcoming movie will be sexier?

Q: Which was your favourite scene?
A: I enjoyed the end the most, where I became a very 'kampung' girl and that truly reflects me. Jason said the way I walked was funny but I didn't care because this was how people walk in a village, not sophisticated.

Q: You have mentioned earlier that your upcoming movie will be sexier. What is that movie about?
A: It's currently not being shot yet but I was warned about it. I don't know if anyone has interviewed Elaine Daly for "Cahaya". If I am not mistaken, she plays a prostitute. The same director Johan John has approached me to do something similar like "Cahaya" and I saw what did they did for Elaine's character. It was tastefully done. She wasn't naked but she showed a lot of skin and because of the way it was carried out, it suggested a lot of nudity. That's why when John asked me if I would be interested in doing a movie with them with the same amount of suggestive nudity shots and how it will be portrayed, I agreed. As Elaine is a good friend of mine, she was saying that she got a lot of criticism because of what was being shown.

"Belukar" will be in cinemas beginning 6 May 2010!
