26 Feb – Sabah has two new cinemas this year! Being the first two cinemas in Sandakan and Tawau, Star Cineplex is giving local movie-goers their first cinema experience with four screens each. The Sandakan cineplex has a total of 909 seats while the one in Tawau has 824 seats. Opened since 12 January 2007, they had movies such as "Eragon", "Night at the Museum", "Casino Royale", "Happy Feet" and "Curse of the Golden Flower" during the opening week. Targeted at students and senior citizens, the cinemas offer these groups attractive promotions. Also, it would be 'Movie Day' on Wednesday, where ticket prices would be at a lower price. The cineplex will be introducing a new ticketing system which would only be confirmed in June. During the Chinese New Year, Star Cineplex offers movies such as "Protege", "Ghost Rider", "Music and Lyrics", "Lady Iron Chef" at both these venues, and also a sneak release for "It's a Wonderful Life", which will only be released nationwide on 1 March. There are also movies which are shown at one of the cinemas, such as "Confession of Pain" in Sandakan only and "House of Mahjong" was shown in Tawau only. When contacted, Star Cineplex mentioned that tickets for the movies are about 90% sold out during the Chinese New Year season. Star Cineplex has four other cinemas in Sarawak, and these two additions are the first out of the state. With other oprators having only one cinema in Sarawak or Sabah, Star is not only the largest operator in Sarawak, but also the largest in Sabah now.
