6 Feb – In light of the upcoming comedy film "Ah Long Pte Ltd", we scored some quick alone time with its director Jack Neo and one of its more colourful actors, Mark Lee. "Ah Long" is a Singaporean film starring Fann Wong, Mark Lee, Richard Low, and Malaysian talents KK Lim and Daniel Tan.

Hi Jack, can you tell us about the movie and what actually inspired you to do it?
The idea of making the movie actually came from what we actually see from the real lives of Ah Longs, which are very controversial. I guess we are all well aware of the scenario.

Why did you choose to shoot most scenes in Malaysia instead of Singapore?
Whether Malaysia or Singapore, the point here is that both territories face similar issues about Ah Longs.

Why did you choose Malaysian actors to star in this film?
Since it is a Malaysian production so of course we wanted Malaysian actors to do the role. On top of that, they (the actors) were good with the roles and were very capable of carrying it out. And this is the first time we see this kind of collaboration, so in a way it's good for marketing purposes too. We can market the movie in both countries. And this is good development for the industry in both countries.

What's your most memorable moment as a director for this movie?
I think the most memorable would be filming the fighting scene, which is quite challenging and tough for us (the crew).

Do you think this movie can beat all of your previous movies?
There is a possibility but I don't know. But I believe that since most of the scenes were shot in Malaysia, I guess the audience would probably enjoy it more as it relates to Malaysians.

What's your next project?
A movie called "Money Not Enough". It will also star Mark Lee.

Actor Mark Lee

Hi, Mark. Tell us what it's like acting in "Ah Long"?
Well, for me it's a bit challenging as I need to maintain my performance - I can't be overdoing it nor can I give less that what is expected of me. I needed to make sure that my act stayed on track throughout the shoot.

What kind of research did you put into playing your character?
Well, I had several hairdressers to refer to. It gives me better understanding about the character really.

What are the challenges you faced making this movie?
The challenge for me I think is to dance! You know that I'm not a dancer. But they want me to dance especially for the music video in this movie. I learned fast and I have to lip sync as well.

In the movie, you play an effeminate man. How do you think people would react to your character?
Based on the preview that we had in Singapore recently, a lot of people were laughing because of my role. They seem to like the things my character says.

What it's like working with Jack Neo?
Working with him was not straightforward because he is very creative and tended to change the script while filming. So as an actor I have to adapt and be ready for changes at all times.

What is your expectation for "Ah Long" in Malaysia?
I think people would love it. In Malaysia there are very few local Chinese movies made. The content is local so I'm sure Malaysians would love it.

What was your experience like working with Malaysia artistes?
I think they are good. They were very committed to filming and were willing to listen to suggestions and comments about their acting. This doesn't always happen – especially with some foreign actors.

What are you trying to say with this movie?
When Ah Longs give trouble to a debtor's family members, they have to bear in mind that they have families themselves. Life may deal you a cruel twist of fate! Of course, one of the most obvious messages is that when you borrow money from a loan shark, it may lead to dire circumstances.

"Ah Long Pte Ltd" will be playing in cinemas nationwide 14 March 2008.
