Cast & crew of "Punggok Rindukan Bulan"

29 Aug - Azharr Rudin's first feature film, the sublimely named "Punggok Rindukan Bulan", will make its local release at GSC International Screens this 25 September 2008.

The art movie, known as "This Longing" in English, explores themes of space and emptiness, underlined by an allegory to the uncomfortable relationship between Singapore and Malaysia. Shot mostly in border town Johor, "Punggok" chronicles the silent meanderings of a boy (Saeful Nazhif Satria) and his father (Sharonizam Noor) who are abandoned by their mother (Maya Karin) without notice.

Speaking at the press conference for the film, 27-year-old director Azharr Rudin said: "The word is symbiosis – I want to explore the relationship between people and the environment they live in." When prompted on the meaning of the film title, he said: "Actually the film is very location-specific and I could have well called it 'Bukit Chagar Flats' but not many know the place. However, 'longing' is a universal concept that everybody knows. People who know Malay well will appreciate the full depth of the proverb."

Studio support Amir Muhammad and Tan Chui Mui were also present to introduce the movie.

"Punggok" will make its festival run at the upcoming 13th Pusan International Film Festival and the Vancouver International Film Festival.

"Punggok Rindukan Bulan" plays at GSC International Screens this 25 September 2008.
