12 Jan – "Avatar" generated US$50.3 million over the North American weekend box office (Jan 7-10), breaking the record for biggest fourth weekend gross previously held by "Titanic"'s US$28.7 million. According to Box Office Mojo, the film also shattered the fourth week record internationally, raking in US$150.5 million from 110 countries (except Italy, where it opens 15 Jan). The weekend amount made "Avatar" the top-grossing movie of 2009 with US$430.8 million in four weeks, beating "Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen", as well as the seventh-highest grossing picture of all time, surpassing "Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest". Currently, "Avatar"'s worldwide tally stood at US$1.34 billion, marching ever closer to "Titanic"'s US$1.84 billion all time benchmark.
