20 May – Kota Kinabalu's first cinema hall will a digital projection system is now an attraction for 3D-hungry cinemagoers, as the 8-screen GSC Suria Sabah opened for business this morning. Reportedly built at the cost of RM15.5million, the outlet located on the 8th floor of Suria Sabah Shopping Mall will complement the existing GSC 1Borneo and offer an additional 1,465 seats in Kota Kinabalu. The new multiplex in the heart of Kota Kinabalu town has also been equipped with two spaces for wheelchairs in each of the eight halls. With this new cinema, Golden Screen Cinemas now has a total of 183 screens in 23 locations nationwide. At the launch event today, GSC CEO Koh Mei Li said: "With this 3D facility, moviegoers here can now enjoy the latest 3D movies in town, starting with 'Shrek Forever After' which opens today. We'll also be bringing back James Cameron's 'Avatar 3D' to GSC Suria Sabah in conjunction with this launch".
Upcoming 3D movies that have been scheduled for this year include "Toy Story 3", "Despicable Me", "Cats & Dogs: Revenge of Kitty Galore", "Resident Evil Afterlife", "Piranhas 3D" and "Sammy's Adventure: The Secret Passage". Also present at the launch event was Datuk Iliyas Ibrahim (Mayor of Kota Kinabalu), Mr Humphrey Tan (Managing Director, Makamewah Sdn Bhd) and other distinguished guests. As part of the opening offer, the public can look forward to special giveaways like "Buy 1 Free 1" coupon, "Buy 2 Free 1" coupon. Movie characters from "Harry Potter", "Woody from Toy Story 3" and "Robin Hood" will be making their round in selected locations.
