24 May – Dubbed "The Final Chapter" of the franchise, "Shrek Forever After" debuted happily at No.1 in the Malaysian weekend box office (20-23 May) while "Robin Hood" and his merry men surrendered to second place. Available in digital 3D, the fourth "Shrek" instalment shot to the top of Cinema Online's Hot Movie Checks over the weekend, followed by "Robin Hood", "A Nightmare On Elm Street", "Ip Man 2" and "Iron Man 2".
Unfortunately in North America, "Shrek Forever After" opened far, far below the mighty starts of some of its predecessors although it had the broadest launch ever for an animated movie, grossing an estimated US$71.3 million, according to Box Office Mojo. Currently, "Shrek The Third" still holds the record for highest-grossing animated opening with US$121.6 million, followed by "Shrek 2" at US$108 million and "The Simpsons Movie" at US$74 million. "Shrek Forever After" ranks fourth on that list. Meanwhile, Shrek made a special appearance during the launch of GSC Suria Sabah last Thursday in time for the release of "Shrek Forever After". Megalong Cineplex Penampang in Sabah also opened at the same time.
