2 Dec – Malaysian star Michelle Yeoh, is a true fighter. After physical roles like her stint as a 'Bond Girl' in "Tomorrow Never Dies", "Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon", "Reign of Assassins", she now turns to more quiet battles, like Luc Besson's latest effort, "The Lady", which sees official release today in LA, according to Daily Chilli. The two-hour biopic focuses on the private life of Aung San Suu Kyi, whose struggle for her country of Myanmar, or informally, Burma, made her a democracy icon. However, Suu Kyi's struggle for her country came at a high personal cost. On her husband's deathbed, he was unable to see her because a visa is not granted to him. Suu Kyi then had an option to leave the country, which she forfeited because she was certain that she would never have been allowed to return, and her fight for freedom is not yet at an end. "It was the price she had to pay," said Luc Besson. The "Fifth Element director added, "Thousands of people give their lives unquestioningly, simply because they believe it is a just cause." Yeoh, who was recently deported from Burma for her portrayal of Aung San Suu Kyi, had described the film as an extraordinary yet positive love story, which could be one of the reasons for her name being put on the blacklist by Myanmar's repressive government. "The love that united her with her husband gave her immense strength," said the 48-year-old. Her British husband Michael Aris will be played by English actor David Thewlis, best known for his role as Remus Lupin in the "Harry Potter" franchise. "The Lady" will be released in Malaysia's cinemas come 16 February 2012, although no release date has been set for Singapore's cinemas as yet.
