"New Year's Eve" celebration!

"New Year's Eve" takes over the weekend box office as the holiday season continues to inch a little closer.
13 Dec – By now almost everyone has already watched "The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn Part 1", but love is still very much in the air as they opt for a happier choice in "New Year's Eve", a film with interweaving stories of an ensemble cast, all taking place on "New Year's Eve", which resulted in a weekend gross of US $13 million. Second in line is Jonah Hill's "The Sitter", a black comedy about a washed-up college student, which received an equally washed-up total, although it succeeded in overtaking "The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn Part 1". The latter opened in third place, charting a record of being in the top three for four consecutive weeks, according to online tracker, Box Office Mojo.

However, for Malaysia, "New Year's Eve" dropped the ball on the ball drop, as moviegoers were more excited for the film adaptation of the hit novel, "Ombak Rindu", proving the mettle of the local director Osman Ali to overcome Hollywood productions. Placing second is "Osthe", a Tamil remake of the blockbuster Hindi movie in 2010, "Dabangg," about family and love in the midst of corruption and villainy. As for third place, it was awarded to "Petaling Street Warriors", another local movie, for the weekend just gone.

In Singapore, moviegoers are celebrating "New Year's Eve" too, which is a signal that it is about time for the start of something new other than the forbidden romance between a vampire and human. Coming in second place is the swashbuckling "Puss In Boots", proving that humour is definitely the best medicine, or in this case, money-maker, while the local movie "Already Famous" takes third place for the local box office for the weekend just gone.

Other new releases and sneak peeks last week in Malaysia include, "New Year's Eve", "The Muppets", "White Vengeance", "Osthe" and "Datin Ghairah".

In Singapore, new releases and sneak peeks last week were, "Ladies vs Ricky Bahl", "Magic To Win", "The Muppets" and "East Meets West 2011".
