5 May – Following the success of author Stephenie Meyer's "Twilight" saga, her other series "The Host", has also been picked up by independent production studio Inferno for the big screen with Oscar nominee Saoirse Ronan set as the lead, Deadline reports. 17-year-old Ronan, whose most recent role was as an assassin in "Hanna" along side Eric Bana ("Time Traveler's Wife"), will play the titular role as Melanie Stryder, whose mind gets taken over by an alien parasite known as the Wanderer. Ronan's character in "The Host" will require her to switch between two roles, Melanie and the Wanderer, which is believed to be quite a challenge to portray compared to the characters Meyer created for the "Twilight" saga. Meyer has also revealed plans for the novel series to be a trilogy with the next two sequels to be tentatively titled "The Soul" and "The Seeker", which will most likely make it to the big screen as well if "The Host" gets good response. Andrew Niccol who has previously worked with critical acclaimed films such as "Gattaca", "Lord of War" and "The Truman Show", will adapt Meyer's novel into a script and might also be set to direct. Inferno will be optioning "The Host" to potential distributors at the upcoming Cannes Film Festival next week, where it is expected to be one of the hot titles that is up for grabs especially since the "Twilight" saga has grossed over more than US $1 billion worldwide. Meyer's "Breaking Dawn: Part 1", the latest movie from the "Twilight" saga, will be released in Malaysia and Singapore on 24 November this year.
