Michelle Yeoh to be Oscar judge

Michelle Yeoh is set to be the first Malaysian invited to be an Oscar judge.

4 Jul – It is an honour to announce that Michelle Yeoh is officially the first Malaysian to be asked to join the star-studded panel of voters to decide who gets the Oscars in the upcoming 2013 Academy Awards.

A total of 176 actors and directors have been invited by the Academy Of Motion Picture Arts And Sciences to be part of the judging process, where they will be selecting the nominees, then the winners for the Academy Awards, which is the most prestigious movie accolade in Hollywood.

Besides the 49-year-old actress, Andy Serkis ("The Lord Of The Rings"), Jean Dujardin ("The Artist"), Jessica Chastain ("The Help"), Jonah Hill ("Moneyball"), Matthew McConaughey ("Magic Mike") and Terrence Malick ("The Tree of Life") were also invited, to name a few.

Fellow Asian star who made the list is Hong Kong's art house director Wong Kar Wai, who is best known for his romantic films such as "In The Mood For Love", "Happy Together" and "2046". The two are the latest additions among Asian Academy members, which includes Ang Lee, Chen Kaige, Jet Li, Joan Chen and Zhang Ziyi.

Michelle's previous involvements with the Oscars were back in 2001 and 2006, for "Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon" and "Memoirs Of A Geisha", respectively. The former was nominated for 10 awards, and won four, including Best Foreign Language Film while the latter received six nominations and won three.

The latest buzz for Michelle can be credited to her praiseworthy performance in the biographical movie "The Lady", which was based on the life of Aung San Suu Kyi, despite the fact that the film failed to generate much critical or box office buzz.

The panel of judges will be casting their ballots for the 85th Oscars on 24th February 2013.
